Coaching works best in schools when there is a clear commitment to achieving specific objectives, with a group of staff who want to drive the process forward.

In addition, change is at the heart of the process. Progress and learning go hand in hand with doing something different: this is an aspect all schools have to sign up to in order to make the progress they are looking for. A key question to ask yourself: without clear objectives set out in the School Development Plan, how will you know if you are succeeding?

Finally, the coaching relationship is something very special: it is not a problem fixing situation, it is very much about the teacher helping others come to terms with their own strengths and areas for development, and then using them to achieve the necessary goals. Successful coaching relationships are nurtured when staff, at whatever level, are skilled in the process, and are committed to making it work.
