How you go about this team building process depends on the support you have from an HR or Learning and Development department. In an ideal world, you would probably start your team building process even earlier than where you are probably now. You would have:

  • A specification for the work or tasks that you and your new team have to complete
  • The appropriate number of people on the team to ensure effective cooperation and decision making
  • A detailed job description for each person on the team
  • A comprehensive person specification for each team member, which would include a profile of not only their knowledge, skills, qualifications and experience but their desirable attributes as well: their team skills
  • A breakdown of the ‘team’ skills required: these would be aligned to the nature of the task the team will have to perform: Diagnostics, Design, Development, Project Management, Finance, Engineering, Personnel Management, etc
  • A recruitment programme that would give you the time to find the ideal candidates, which, in addition to verifying their knowledge, skills, qualifications and experience, would also assess their team skills

However, most organisations do not have the resources to provide this level of support, so we are happy to help you devise a team development strategy, which would start with many of the topics listed above, before getting your team together for a team building programme.
